I support Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) chief Deputy Comm Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay in wanting to charge the 40 Malaysians returning to Malaysia after being detained for suspected involvement in terrorism activities in Syria. They may have committed countless atrocious crimes in Syria but they still deserve a fair trial and hence be charged in the court of law.

Ayob Khan, however, applies a different treatment in his handling of suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) Malaysian supporters who live in Malaysia. Ayob Khan’s team has recently arrested 12 alleged LTTE’s Malaysian supporters under SOSMA where their initial detention without trial can be extended to 28 days. SOSMA is a repressive and draconian law which the Pakatan Harapan government has pledged to repeal.

Based on Ayob Khan’s latest press conference, he said that the police have evidence in items and financial transactions to collaborate the detention. With such “strong” evidence, the police should have the confidence in charging the 12 suspects in court!

Why is Ayob Khan showing glaring double standard and two-faced in his actions on the suspected Malaysian terrorists in Syria and the alleged LTTE supporters in Malaysia? Ayob Khan has to explain why he denied the latter the right to bail and to be trial in a criminal court.

Who made Ayob Khan judge and jury over suspected terrorism?
