If I succeed, as a Member of Parliament I will be able to champion the same causes that have defined my stand and convictions in politics, but this time for the nation in Parliament

Yesterday, the DAP announced my candidacy for the parliamentary seat of P117 Segambut in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur for the upcoming 14th General Elections. I would like to thank the leadership of the DAP for believing in me, now and 10 years ago by first fielding me for the state seat of N31 Subang Jaya in the historic 12th General Elections of 2008, back when I was a novice 29-year-old with no experience in politics.

This timely announcement also coincided with the dissolution of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly yesterday. I am indebted to Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Selangor for entrusting me with the role of the Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly from 2013 to present. Thank you DYMM Tuanku for being so supportive of all the reforms we have implemented in Selangor, making it the most progressive legislative institution in Malaysia.

It has been such a great honour representing the people of Subang Jaya in the last 10 years. This decision to contest in Segambut would mean that I will not be defending the state seat of Subang Jaya. I am confident the DAP’s choice of my replacement here would be in the best interest of the people of Subang Jaya and of Selangor.

As Subang Jaya releases one of her own to contest at the federal level, it is with much hope and faith that I accept this new challenge as we give it our all in this 14th General Elections. Subang Jaya made history in 2008 with electing the first DAP representative of this seat, and again in 2013 when the ADUN of Subang Jaya became the first woman Speaker in Malaysia. I move to contest a Parliament seat with a renewed hope that we will make history again. If I succeed, as a Member of Parliament I will be able to champion the same causes that have defined my stand and convictions in politics, but this time for the nation in Parliament. I hope that the voters of P117 Segambut will entrust me with their votes and send a Pakatan Harapan candidate into Parliament. I will hit the ground running and I am looking forward to meeting the voters of Segambut in the coming days.
