DAP wishes a Happy Chinese New Year in ushering in the year of the Rabbit. There is greater joy this year at the open celebration after two years of COVID-19 MCO lockdowns and voting in a unity government that represents all Malaysians regardless of race, religion and background.
Malaysians must unite to defeat racism and extremism to overcome corruption, uphold human dignity, and to improve our economic livelihood. Despite supporting the wishes of the King and Malay Rulers of a unity government that can establish political stability and bring the country together to focus on addressing our economic challenges, these destructive elements stubbornly persist in their campaign of lies, fear and threats.
Only a strong economy that makes people’s lives better is the vaccine against this dangerous virus from infecting the entire population. The unity government has taken the right measures to ensure political stability and win over investor confidence in the business community. This is reflected in the strengthening ringgit that appreciated from RM4.75 under the previous government to RM 4.32 to the US dollar. Further, reduced inflationary projections have caused Bank Negara to unexpectedly stop hiking up the Overnight Policy rate, bringing respite and cheer to borrowers.
The Chinese community’s strong support for the unity government reflects their aspirations for a government that is fair and respects the people’s rights as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. Further, by giving attention to the impending resolution of the foreign workers shortage, reasonable flight fares during the festive season, putting up Chinese New Year decorations in public places and arrangement of flights for Sarawak teachers in Chinese primary schools in Johor to return to Sibu has brought about a feel-good factor.
