Media Statement by MP of Bandar Kuching, Kelvin Yii on 15 December 2023

The suggestion by BERSATU’S Wan Faysal to ammend the Federal Constitution to make the position of the Prime Minister of Malaysia only exclusive to Malay Muslims is not only against the founding spirit of the Constitution, but also against the basic spirit of the Malaysian Agreement 1963 which was intended by our forefathers.

Such parochial thinking by such politician from Perikatan Nasional will not just limit our country in our potential, but also further divide and create animosity among fellow Malaysians. Such narrow thinking and bigotry is also what is causing the widening gap of integration not just among races, but among the regions of Sabah & Sarawak.

Does this mean that even the native Sabahans & Sarawakians cannot take top leadership of our country that we has identified as our own?

We must know that Malaysia was formed by 3, regions, Sabah, Sarawak & Malaya based on principles and rights entailed in MA63 that was integrated into the Federal Constitution.

Such principles provided for a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural Malaysian aspiration.

I strongly believe it is the vision of our forefathers to build a country where every Malaysian child can dream, grow up, contribute and take leadership in our country.

This includes the possibility of any Malaysia to take the top leadership as appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who in His Majesty’s judgment commands the confidence of the majority of the members of that House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat) and be measured and judged by their abilities and contributions to this country we call our own.

That is why such toxic politics should be rejected not just by people from the Borneo States, but more importantly all peace-loving Malaysia who continues to uphold the spirit of multiculturalism and just want to see an inclusive Malaysia that goes beyond sentiments that continues to divide us.
