Opening speech by Phee Boon Poh, EXCO for Environment and Welfare cum Director of Penang Green Council during Majlis Penyampaian Anugerah Sekolah Hijau 2022 dan Perasmian Anugerah Sekolah Hijau 2023 Peringkat Negeri Pulau Pinang on 21st March 2023 at Auditorium A, Komtar

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, students and teachers. It’s my honour to be here today to witness the award ceremony today.

Children and youths are the key agents in tackling the climate and environmental crisis.

Almost every child on Earth is exposed to at least one form of climate and environmental hazard and stress, affecting their potential to fully shine. Biodiversity loss for example can jeopardize a sustainable future for our children globally. A safe, responsive, and nurturing environments are an important part in supporting the development of preschoolers, students and youth. Hence, it is our duty to open a path for them to get involve in the environmental issues and be aware of the consequences that the Earth is facing right now.

And so, The Penang State government has launched Anugerah Sekolah Hijau Pulau Pinang or Penang Green School Award Programme back in 2010 through Penang Green Council in collaboration with both local councils (MBPP and MBSP). This annual audit programme is open for both primary and secondary schools in Penang to educate children on waste, water and energy conservation. Besides, the key objective of this programme is also to inculcate love for the environment in students, and the community as a whole.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The main purpose that we are here today is to celebrate the success of efforts made by schools and kindergartens in 2022. I would like to congratulate all winners that will be receiving all awards and incentives today. We have a total of 114 schools participated last year, 44 schools from MBPP and 70 schools from MBSP. Out of these numbers, 6 schools from both island and mainland are selected as winners for the categories. For Penang Green Kindy Incentive 2022, top 10 registered preschools with the highest marks will be rewarded with incentives worth RM 500 and a certificate.

Of course, these programmes will not be successful without the support from Penang Development Corporation (PDC). I would like to thank PDC for sponsoring the cash prizes for both Penang Green School Award Programme 2022 and Penang Green Kindy Incentive 2022. Also, well done to Penang Green Council, MBPP and MBSP for the hard work and effort since the beginning.

In short, it is undeniably important to let our children exposed and teach them about environmental awareness to ensure that their lives are secure. We must equip our children with the necessary tools to behave in a responsible and informed way towards the environment. After all, it’s the future generations that will be most affected by our actions. It’s time for us to reflect and act now.

Thank you. LovePenang
