Celebrations to usher in the new year went horribly wrong in Pandamaran Sports Complex.
It’s unfortunate that fourteen people including children were injured when the fireworks exploded on the ground.
We can however heave a sigh of relief as no one died. But we may not be this lucky all the time.
While I welcome MPKs domestic investigation, we need an open investigation on safety and security protocols as this is a matter of public interest.
Local authorities such as the MPK should be responsible and sensitive to safety procedures especially when it involves public gatherings.
It is irresponsible of the organisers of the event to engage an unlicensed company for the fireworks display. And media reports indicate that MPK did not have the relevant permit to organise such an event.
The Selangor state government must therefore form an investigative team, that can come up with safety recommendations and protocol, which can be used by all local councils.
All of us have a collective responsibility to ensure such untoward incidents do not happen in the future.
My heart goes out to the fourteen individuals who were injured and wish them speedy recovery.
