Speech by Sundarajoo Somu, EXCO for Housing and Environment cum Vice Chairman of Penang Green Council for the Opening of Penang ESG Conference and Exhibition 2023 on the 21st of November 2023 at Olive Tree Hotel

Honorable Guests, Esteemed Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with great pleasure and a profound sense of purpose that I welcome you to the esteemed Penang ESG Conference and Exhibition 2023. This gathering marks a pivotal moment in our collective commitment towards Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and their integration into the fabric of modern business practices.

ESG, encapsulating the pillars of sustainability and ethical accountability, stands as a beacon guiding organizations towards responsible and conscientious operations. In recent times, ESG has transcended mere profitability, becoming a critical yardstick for investors and a driving force behind strategic decision-making.

The ‘E’ in ESG holds particular significance, advocating for environmental stewardship, sustainability, and conservation. Penang, renowned for its forward-thinking initiatives, has taken significant strides toward becoming a green state aligned with the CM’s Penang2030 vision. Our concerned efforts to reduce single-use plastics are a testament to our commitment to preserving nature’s delicate balance while advancing economic prosperity.

As the Exco for Housing and Environment, I stand dedicated to propelling Penang’s ESG initiatives forward. Our state, as the nucleus of the northern manufacturing corridor, remains at the forefront of sustainable practices. The National Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, recently introduced by our Prime Minister, heralds a promising economic future. This plan not only promises significant growth in the manufacturing sector but also underscores the importance of sustainability and responsible business conduct under Ekonomi Madani.

The Penang Green Agenda 2030, a collaborative effort between the Penang State Government and Penang Green Council (PGC), serves as our roadmap toward a sustainable future. This initiative aims to build resilient communities, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through PGA, we continue to implement strategies across ten focus areas, reinforcing our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The Penang Green Industry Programme (PGIP), an offshoot of PGA, underscores our commitment to the circular economy. This program, focused on reducing environmental impacts within the manufacturing sector, champions partnerships with local SMEs, fostering sustainable practices while enhancing competitiveness.

Moreover, the emphasis on Green Finance has been instrumental in channeling financial resources toward environmental sustainability. Hosting the Penang Green Finance Conference in 2022 was a step forward in leveraging financial mechanisms to further our sustainability goals.

Today’s conference and exhibition serve as a catalyst for ESG integration, aiming to raise awareness, foster knowledge-sharing, and encourage collaboration. Our objectives are clear: promoting ESG awareness, facilitating knowledge exchange, encouraging collaboration, showcasing integration strategies, and igniting the sustainability revolution.

In closing, I urge each of you to actively engage, collaborate, and embrace the transformative power of ESG principles. Let us pave the way for a future where responsible and sustainable practices are not just aspirations but ingrained values driving every facet of our existence. Together, let us script a narrative of prosperity harmonized with environmental stewardship and societal well-being.
