Speech by the Deputy Minister of Education cum MP for Tanjong, Lim Hui Ying for the Opening Ceremony of Penang Green Market by PGC the 18th of November 2023 at New World Park, Penang

Good afternoon and thank you for having me today at the Penang Green Market by Penang Green Council (PGC). It is a remarkable day as we cherish this millstone by PGC with the presence of each and every one of you.

PGC is Penang’s state agency to promote environmental education and outreach programs since 2011.

Through PGC’s environmental education event such as this, we learn about nature, address climate change challenges, and make impactful actions to protect and improve the natural ecosystem.

The profound impact of education on our children stands as the foundation for shaping a brighter and more promising future. Environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and resources depletion are gradually affecting our lives.

Knowledge empowers people to make informed decisions. However, leaving an irreparably damaged planet for our children is not an option.

We must bear in mind that we do not own this Earth; rather, we are borrowing it from future generations.

It’s crucial that we learn to live in a manner that meets our present needs without compromising the needs of future generations. Through the Penang Green Market by PGC, we aim to inspire everyone to consider the environmental impact of our choices and actions, cultivating a sense of stewardship for the environment within the community.

Education can manifest in numerous ways; community engagement is one such approach. The Penang Green Market by PGC offers a platform for individuals to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts, from local initiatives to global advocacy. It also empowers individuals to champion environmentally responsible policies and engage with government, organizations, and businesses to advocate for sustainability.

Thus, I am immensely glad to affirm that the Penang Green Council team has been wholly devoted to championing “green” initiatives in Penang through various programs.

I encourage everyone to take the lead and support this green market, not only for your own good but also for the welfare of the next generation.

Remember, environmental education can take place in formal educational settings, informal community programs, nature centres, and through diverse media and communication channels. Our objective is to instill a sense of responsibility for the environment and provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to make sustainable choices and take positive environmental actions.

I hope that everyone gains significant benefits from this green market. Once again, let’s continue to build a greener Penang together. Let us be the change that this world deserves.

Thank you very much.
