The DAP condemns in the strongest of terms the charges of sedition brought against Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
The Seputeh MP was today charged for sedition in the Sessions Court, Kuala Lumpur over a Chinese New Year video published in February this year entitled “Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014”
The Sedition Act is once again being used to stifle freedom of expression. It is an archaic law which has been criticized internationally as being outdated, unjust and draconian.
Our Prime Minister pledged to repeal this Act but he has failed to do so. He is a weak leader, one who lacks political courage to see through with his promises.
In fact, it is quite the reverse as we see an increased use of the Act particularly against members of the opposition of late. Surely this cannot be the reforms the Prime Minister speaks of nor what he describes as the best democracy in the world?
The video clip is not to my mind, by any stretch of the imagination seditious. Just because many police reports are lodged in relation to it doesn’t make it seditious.
I call upon the Attorney-General to seriously reconsider and withdraw the charge against Teresa Kok.
