The decision of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to temporarily block access to London-based whistleblower website Sarawak Report, is an action that suppress the freedom of speech.
This move also proves that MCMC is biased and unprofessional when they make any decision with their power that given by federal government, apparently this is an action that help BN to cover up their guilt since Sarawak Report has been published the news that keep exposing the Malaysian politicians that involve in the 1MDB scandal.
As MCMC give their reason of blocking access to the website, they said the contents of SR could be fake, and thus might affect on peace and causes national instability, disrupt public order and economic stability.
I would like to ask MCMC, why don’t they also take the same action against the pro- UMNO blogger Papagomo that was suspected of spreading false stories during the Low Yat Plaza incident that happened in Kuala Lumpur in earlier weeks.
And also Utusan Malaysia, which is well known as the mouthpiece of UMNO, it is also a media that always give rise to controversies with their racist commentary, why MCMC never take action against this?
What I would like to emphasize here is no media or website should face such kind of white terror under the principle of freedom of expression, or the policy of “no censorship of internet” that adopted by our government.
If Sarawak Report can be blocked access as happening now, who else dare to report about corruption, power abuse and impropriety whether by print, electronic or online media?
If anybody found any website accused he/she with lies and falsehoods then just investigate or take legal action against it as well as show evidence to proof your innocent, but not block access from the internet user altogether.
I hope that MCMC can work with fair and professional ethics since it is government machinery. Do not downgrade yourself as the weapon of BN.
