I commend the Royal Education Award winner in Universiti Technikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) Nahvin Muthusamy for speaking about the restoration of meritocracy in the education system, for it is time that we end the abuses and deviations in the education system as we do not want a local university to award PHD to someone who. Is totally media illiterate, and cannot distinguish between right from wrong or lies and fake news from truth and fact to enter Parliament to help Malaysia end up as a divided, failed and kleptocratic state.
I said in Parliament 52 years ago that the DAP is not opposed to the New Economic Policy (NEP) to ensure that the Malay poor had opportunities to become doctors, lawyers and engineers as there are non-Malay poor who needed help, but we were against affirmative policies to make the Malay rich even richer.
The NEP was meant to have a time-span of 20 years and to end in 1990, but it has continued for over 50 years.
For a start, we should up the abuses and deviations of the NEP.
Malaysia has ended the period of political uncertainty and turmoil which produced four Prime Ministers in five years.
With Anwar Ibrahim assured of his premiership until the 16th General Election either in 2026 or 2027 Anwar should focus on the policy and institutional reforms and changes he has promised the country, and there is no better start than to respond to Najhvin’s brave speech and end the abuses and deviations in the NEP in the education field.
