Time to implement sexual education starting from Pre-schools!

Richard Huckle is a paedophile in our backyard until he was arrested in UK. From 2006 to 2014, he was committing hideous crime against children aged between 6 months to 12 years. It is believed that Huckle had abused up to 200 children. Yet, according the reply from Home Minister dated November 9,2016, no one ever noticed his unusual behavior and lodged police report against him.

Yesterday a Malacca Hospital gynaecologist dropped a bombshell by revealing that at least three children are treated for sexual abuse at the facility every week. Dr Maimunah Fadzil said the number usually rises during school holidays and festive periods, when children spend more time at home. In most cases, she said, children willingly fall into the trap. Dr Mainumah added that some of the children have even become “addicted” to being sexually abused.[1]

That is not the end of the story. An average of 18,000 teenagers in Malaysia get pregnant each year and seek medical attention at government health clinics. That is 1,500 cases of teen girls getting pregnant each month or 50 cases a day in the country.

All these shocking statistics are proof that we need to conduct comprehensive sex education from preschools without any delay.

I appreciate the effort of government to enact a bill on sexual crime against children, however prevention also plays an important role. Sex cannot be a taboo subject because children need to be protected.

Sex education has been implemented in many developed countries and we have a need to follow suit in order to prevent more tragedies like Richard Huckle and many more sexual abuse cases at home.
