In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia, The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Dzulkifli Ahmad has promised to act against corrupt politicians – after the general election.
He said they did not want to act against politicians now as it could be used a campaign fodder in GE14.
To be a credible organisation and to be effective in combating corruption, MACC has to act independently, professionally and courageously without any regard for political consideration or sensitivity.
Dzukifli’s statement is therefore unconvincing and unacceptable.
Why should MACC worry about MACC arrests being used as campaign folder? That is not MACC’s problem and Dzukifli should let the politicians worry about the political backlash, embarrassment and attacks.
Actually by making such a statement, he is making people wonder if MACC has faced any political pressures in carrying out their work.
Recently, MACC had congratulated Umno on its 71st anniversary celebration and called on the party to fight corruption.
Umno leaders, the commission urged, must ensure they execute their duties with integrity and stay away from graft and abuse of power.
MACC was criticised for making the call and Dzukifli has retorted by saying that there should be nothing to fear in doing the right things.
He further said that if MACC dares not say the right things and the truth, then there is no meaning in MACC’s jihad against corruption.
Let’s hope that in action too, MACC will carry out their duties without fear and favour.
MACC should not accord any politicians “special treatment” and must act when there is a case for it. There is no need to wait till after the general election.
