Visit to Sirim by UNCTAD and Deputy Minister of MITI

Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong, alongside representatives from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) led by their Head of Economic Cooperation and Integration amongst Developing countries (ECIDC) Branch Dr Stephanie Blankenburg, visited SIRIM Bukit Jalil to explore opportunities for deepening technical cooperation and learning about advancements in smart manufacturing.

Currently, UNCTAD is working with Malaysia to provide training and capacity building, including in the areas of e-trade for women and non-tariff measures. UNCTAD also recently launched two new collaborative initiatives, namely “Integrated Policy Strategies and Regional Policy Coordination for Resilient, Green and Transformative Development: Supporting Selected Asian BRI Partner Countries to Achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda” and “Quantifying South-South Cooperation to mobilize funds for the SDGs”.

The SIRIM Bukit Jalil branch is home to SIRIM’s Industrial Centre of Innovation – Smart Manufacturing focusing on industrial innovation and Tech Up.

This visit has left a deep impression among the UNCTAD delegation on SIRIM’s innovation capacity, and marks an important step towards fostering collaboration between SIRIM and international partners.

UNCTAD will work with SIRIM to bring officials from less-developed regions or nations to do training attachments in Malaysia, enabling further knowledge exchange and capacity building.

This partnership will not only enhance the technical capabilities of all parties involved but also contribute meaningfully to humanitarian efforts.
