In the spirit of Malaysia Day, thousands came together at AEON Mall Kuching Central for the 916 United Charity Haircut, an event that turned an everyday errand into a shared act of giving. Organised by Barber Boss in collaboration with Dr Kelvin Yii’s P195 Bandar Kuching Service Centre, the initiative brought together barbers, volunteers, and members of the public from 10am to 10pm, all working toward one goal: uniting to make a difference in our community in Kuching.
The effort paid off in a big way, with 919 participants taking part, securing a place in the Malaysia Book of Records for the Most Participants in a Charity Haircut Event.
But beyond the record, the true win was in what the day represented. Around 40 barbers and volunteers gave their time and skill, offering haircuts at just RM10 each, free for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and students. Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament YB Dr Kelvin Yii contributed RM10,000 to the cause and personally sponsored free haircuts for 50 participants, reflecting a shared belief that community strength comes from showing up for one another.
Every ringgit raised will go toward six charitable organisations making a real difference in Sarawak: PDK Sentuhan Kasih Kuching, The Salvation Army, Kuching Autistic Association, Sarawak Society of the Deaf, Pertubuhan Orang Cacat Sarawak (POCS), and Wishesland International.
YB Dr Kelvin Yii thanked everyone who made the day possible, especially to Barber Boss for achieving the record, the participants, volunteers, barbers, organisers, and partners, whose collective effort captured what Malaysia Day is truly about: unity, generosity, and coming together as one community.
