The sudden demise of former DAP Secretary-General Kerk Kim Hock on 9 August 2017 shocked and saddened DAP members and supporters, as well as patriotic Malaysians.
Kerk’s passing was a great loss as he had led a meaningful life, having been a student leader (he was president of the Monash University Malaysian Students Union), political leader as well as a courageous fighter against cancer.
His political journey started in 1986 when he joined the DAP and won the Durian Daun state seat in the same year. In October 1987, Kerk was detained together with 16 other DAP leaders under the ISA.
In 1990, Kerk won the Pasir Pinji parliamentary seat and in 1999, the Kota Melaka seat. Kerk also became the fourth Secretary General of the DAP and instituted meaningful reforms within the party. He resigned from all party posts after his defeat in the 2004 general election.
Kerk was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2002. He led a normal life for 13 years, until the cancer recurred, but always maintained a positive outlook and zest for life. Heremained a close comrade and confidante to many party leaders until his passing.
In this tribute to a great yet humble leader, DAP invites all Malaysians who appreciate his contributions to join us in honouring Kerk and his time, and to re-educate ourselves about the recent past and to find strength in solidarity – in order to move forward together for a better Malaysia.
