The Election Commission’s announcement today that the voting day will fall on a week day, on a Wednesday, 9th May which is the latest indication that the commission only serves the interest of Barisan Nasional regime, not the Malaysia’s electorate. Naturally, this move will suppress voter turnout – disincentivizing interstate and overseas voters from returning home to cast their votes.
This runs contrary to the commission’s target of achieving a 85%-voter-turnout in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14). What is the point of launching all the campaigns such as ‘Kempen Jom Semak’ dan ‘Jom Kita Mengundi’, if on the other hand, they are making it harder for voters to do so?
Akin to an impartial referee, the EC’s conduct has casted doubts on their independence and credibility to fairly administer the election process. Prior to this, the EC deliberately rejected objections to the redelineation proposal by indiscriminately redrawing the boundaries to favour the BN regime by putting large numbers of opposition-leaning voters into fewer seats and dividing constituencies along racial lines.

Therefore, I urge the EC to come clean to the electorate and explain their rationale for this decision. They owe it to Malaysians to prove that their decision-making process is independent and is not swayed by any political pressure from the caretaker government.
