It’s a cavalier attitude.
Gerakan Merah leader, Mohd Ali Baharom’s, threats against Maria Chin Abdullah is outrageous and clearly done with a criminal intent.
Mohd Ali, better known as Ali Tinju, has said the Bersih Chairperson should watch her back or may no longer “walk on this earth”.
Bersih, the coalition calling for free and fair election, has announced its fifth street rally on November 19. This protest is an act of civil disobedience against the financial scandal surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
Street protests are a symbol of a functioning democracy, which is founded on principles of freedom of expression and assembly.
Hundreds of thousands of people turned up for the last four protests called by Bersih. These Malaysians walked the streets because they have a right to convey their grievances against the UMNO-led ruling government.
And it’s high time that former soldier, Ali, understands that he cannot restrict the rights of the people just because he doesn’t like what they say.
Free-speech rights are for everybody and it certainly does not warrant threats and intimidation such as those by Ali who has gone to the extent of chest thumping his intention to ambush Maria Chin anywhere.
As such I urge the police to investigate the Gerakan Merah chief as Maria Chin could be in grave danger.
