SUHAKAM found false police reports against the detainees, elements of falsification in medical records, abuse of weapons, excessive violence by prison staff and negligence among senior officers.
Yet, no criminal charges have been publicly announced against those who lodged or approved the false police reports. No criminal charges have been publicly announced over the falsified medical records.
Why?
Gan Chin Eng died on 17 January 2025. Only almost 11 months later was one officer charged over his death. The five warders were charged only yesterday!
The public has a right to ask whether anyone would have been charged without the families’ persistence, public pressure and SUHAKAM’s inquiry.
This case is not only about the officers accused of inflicting injuries. It is also about those who allegedly tried to hide the truth, shift blame onto detainees and protect those responsible.
The police and Attorney-General’s Chambers must state clearly what action has been taken against every person implicated in the false reports and falsified medical records.
Justice cannot stop with the hands that carried out the violence. It must reach those who ordered it, enabled it or covered it up.
