DAPSY National Publicity Secretary Ho Chi Yang lambasted Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) MPs for showcasing their lackluster abilities as opposition members by claiming that the Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming’s explanation of government achievements was a waste of time. Such a nonsensical statement by PN not only insulted Malaysia’s democratic system but also humiliated Malaysians’ civic intelligence.
Ho pointed out that Minister Nga Kor Ming’s explanation of the ministry’s achievements was intended to provide an avenue for all Malaysians to better understand the government’s policies and their effectiveness while also allowing everyone to monitor the Unity Government’s performance, thereby enhancing transparency in governance.
Explain Ministry’s Achievements’ to Strengthen Democracy and Empower Citizens
Ho emphasized that after Nga Kor Ming explained his ministry’s achievements, he still dedicated much of his time to answering questions raised by Members of Parliament. Due to a time constraint, written responses will be provided for the remaining questions. As such, the entire process was fully in line with parliamentary rules and procedures.
“With an explanation of the ministry’s achievements, Malaysians can have a better understanding of policies and actions implemented by the Unity Government. This reflects the unity government’s commitment to strengthening democracy, enhancing transparency, and empowering the citizens. The opposition parties, by ignoring the importance of transparency in governance, continued to oppose for the sake of opposing, depriving the people of their right to information, and showing disdain for our civic intelligence. They are unworthy of being MPs who should engage in meaningful and professional political discourse.”
PN’s Hypocrisy in Undermining Democracy
Ho urged the hypocritical PAS to cease playing up racial and religious issues in Parliament, including the multi-lingual signboard issue. PAS’ extreme remarks would erode Malaysia’s multicultural values and render the Parliament a political platform to pursue cheap politics.
Furthermore, Ho highlighted the extreme hypocrisy of PN, especially former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who refused to convene Parliament to consolidate his hold on power. This prevented lawmakers from voicing the people’s concerns and holding the government accountable, which disregarded the spirit of parliamentary democracy and ultimately led to people’s suffering.
Call for Opposition to Improve Questioning Skills and Responsible Governance
Finally, Ho called on the opposition to improve their questioning abilities and use Parliament as a meaningful platform to propose ideas that benefit the nation and the people, while actively overseeing government policies. He urged the opposition to stop presenting baseless and nonsensical arguments, which would render Parliament a laughing stock for the public and even the international community.
