I strongly condemn the irresponsible actions of the ERA FM radio host who mocked the sacred Kavadi dance, a significant religious ritual during the Thaipusam festival that symbolizes devotion to Lord Murugan. Their act of imitating the Kavadi dance while sarcastically chanting “Vel Vel” and laughing is extremely disrespectful and deeply offensive to the Hindu community.
Such behavior not only demonstrates insensitivity but also reflects a lack of respect for the harmony of Malaysia’s multiracial and multireligious society. We must not provoke the beliefs and cultures of others, and we also demand the same respect for our own religion and culture. Mutual respect is the foundation of our nation’s unity, and any form of insult towards the beliefs of any group must be completely rejected.

I call upon the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) to take strict action against those involved. The authorities must thoroughly investigate this matter and ensure that they are held accountable under Section 298 or 298A of the Malaysian Penal Code, which prescribes punishment for any party that maliciously incites disharmony, division, hatred, or insult towards another religion.
Furthermore, I urge SKMM to revoke ERA FM’s broadcasting license due to their failure to control content that has caused offense to religious beliefs. The media plays a crucial role in shaping societal thinking, and any radio station that misuses its platform to ridicule religion should not be allowed to continue operating.
Malaysia is a nation rich in cultural diversity, and there should be no room for actions that could incite division. I stand firmly with the Hindu community and reaffirm my commitment to protecting the dignity of all religious and cultural practices in our country.
