Tan Kok Wai and Fong Kui Lun announced today, for four major reasons, that they will withdraw from the DAP’s Central Executive Committee election at the 18th Party National Congress to be held on March 16 this year.
The following are our reasons for not contesting :
1. We have dedicated half a century to championing the ideals of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), witnessing its transformation from a long-standing opposition party to a key partner in the coalition government. This long journey gives us a great sense of pride and satisfaction. Today, DAP is blessed with many talented individuals, and we have a good leadership succession plan. Now the time has come to give more room to the new generation of leaders to play a more pivotal leadership role to propel the the party to even greater heights.
2. We have full confidence in DAP’s core leadership team. Their strategic approach in terms of “party-building initiatives” and “election preparedness” reflects a well-coordinated plan and synergy between internal and external efforts, keeping pace with contemporary developments. Their competence gives us the assurance and confidence that the party’s future is in capable hands.
3. The evolving political landscape across different periods of history naturally shapes and determines the distinct leadership styles in each generation. Nonetheless, the fundamental principle remains that reforms must align with societal progress, in response to the changing political environment and national priorities should be boldly pursued. In this regard, DAP’s core leadership demonstrates dynamism, seamlessly bridging the past and the future while embracing innovation and progress. We fully recognize their leadership capabilities and talents.
4. Over the past five decades, we have dedicated ourselves to the democratic process, continuously striving to realize the vision of a free, just, equitable and diverse “Malaysian Malaysia” through parliamentary elections. This has been the unwavering mission of our party comrades, who have fought tirelessly and made immense sacrifices to uphold our ideals. While some of us have had the privilege of serving multiple terms as Members of Parliament and State Assemblies, we also acknowledge the countless “unsung heroes” within DAP—ordinary members who have selflessly contributed behind the scenes, making significant sacrifices for the party’s cause. It is only fitting that we extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all our comrades; indeed it is through your steadfast dedication and sacrifices that DAP is where we are today, standing strong. The party belongs to all of us, and together we can all be proud of and celebrate its achievements. We remain forever indebted to all our comrades, and history will not forget each of your contributions, no matter small or big.
