“Floods occuring just before Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” said a reporter who was covering the wave of floods that have affected several areas in Johor at this time. This disaster is sure to have physical and mental impact on those affected, especially as many Muslims are fasting during the month of Ramadan and preparing for the upcoming Eid celebration.
As of 21st March, 2025, the number of flood victims has increased to over 10,000 people, and more than 90 Temporary Evacuation Centers (PPS) have been set up. This critical and serious situation undoubtedly requires support and assistance from the authorities in the affected areas.
In the Johor Jaya area, the Kampung Melayu Pandan area has also been impacted by the flood wave. It is also said to be the worst flood in the area. Upon learning of the dire situation, Johor Jaya State Assemblywoman, Sdri Liow Cai Tung, quickly went down to assess the impact and will provide the necessary supplies to assist the affected residents. The rescue teams also acted swiftly by helping residents evacuate and relocating them to temporary evacuation centers.
With the wave of floods during Ramadan, the victims who are fasting are facing even a greater challenge as they not only endure hunger but the loss and damages of their property throughout the day. Johor Senai State Assemblyman, Sdr Wong Bor Yang, and his team understood this situation. They sent hot meals, bread, and drinking water to the Sekolah Kebangsaan Senai PPS so that everyone could break their fast in the best possible way despite the circumstances. This act of making sure everyone is fed also extends to the officers and volunteers who were busy helping in site.
As Members of Parliament, they too are not exempt from official duties outside of their constituencies. The Member of Parliament for Kluang, Sdri Wong Shu Qi, shared her concerns and sadness, as her office staff continuously provided her with updates regarding the flood in her area. Her office team surveyed the affected areas and ensured that the basic needs of the flood victims at the SJK(C) Ping Ming PPS were met during these difficult times.
Although he is far in India fulfilling his national duties as Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Sdr Liew Chin Tong, the Member of Parliament for Iskandar Puteri, has tirelessly updated the progress of his team on his Facebook page, which has been providing aid to the flood victims. He is also grateful that the boat he provided to the fire and rescue team in Iskandar Puteri was able to be used to rescue people.
The unexpected flood, which is considered to be the worst since 2007, has united many parties in providing assistance. Skudai State Assemblywoman, Sdri Marina Ibrahim, expressed her appreciation to the many NGOs that also helped, such as Amitabha, Foodbank 448, Lion’s Club Skudai, Chin Sian Kok, Tzu Chi, and others, who contributed food and drinks to the flood victims at the PPS MBIP Skudai.
Special thanks to Unit Tindak and volunteers from the DAP who are working tirelessly to mobilise search, rescue and temporary relocation.
We pray that affected areas will recover soon and that the flood victims’ affairs will be eased with the help of all representatives involved. Thank you to everyone who has come forward to help.
