Sabah DAP Women’s Wing successfully passes several key resolutions

The Sabah Democratic Action Party (DAP) Women 2025 Ordinary Convention was successfully held today at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), highlighting a significant milestone for the Sabah DAP Women’s Wing.

The convention was chaired by Kasthuriraani Patto, Vice Chief of DAP Wanita Malaysia, and attended by Teo Nie Ching, National Chief of DAP Wanita Malaysia, who is also the Deputy Minister of Communications and Member of Parliament for Kulai.

Over the past term, the DAP Sabah Women’s Wing has made remarkable progress, establishing 9 divisions across Sabah in Sandakan, Batu Sapi, Tawau, Kota Marudu, Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Keningau, and Tenom which contributed to a significant increase in membership to 3,496 women to date.

Under the leadership of Jannie Lasimbang State Assemblyperson for Kapayan and Pakatan Harapan Women’s Wing Chief, and Clare Taunek former DAP Sabah Wanita Chief, the DAP Sabah Women’s Wing also played a key role in leading mobilising and galvanising more women to participate in not only the political process but in the electoral process as well. The Women’s Wing remains committed to increase women’s representation in leadership positions from grassroot to top leadership positions in the state and nation.

During the opening ceremony of the Sabah DAPSY and Sabah DAP Women’s Convention 2025, Teo Nie Ching highlighted that women play a vital role in DAP’s leadership, with 25% of its Members of Parliament being women, the highest among political parties in Malaysia. As of 2024, 40% of DAP’s membership consists of women, reflecting its strong foundation for achieving 30% representation in decision making roles.

Outgoing Chief of DAP Wanita Sabah, Clare Taunek, expressed her hope for DAP Wanita Sabah to continue raising awareness about the importance of women’s representation in politics. She thanked all committee members for their continued team work and urged the committee to continue their steadfast support to the new committee.

Bronica Sikula the new Women’s Wing Chief, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Clare Taunek for her leadership and dedication. She pledged that under her leadership, the newly elected committee of DAP Wanita Sabah will continue to work hard and committed to achieve greater accomplishments.

The convention also passed key resolutions to address critical issues affecting women in Sabah:-

1. Advocate for 30% women representation in decision-making roles and election candidacies.

2. Urge the Sabah Government to raise the minimum marriage age to 18 by amending the Native Court Enactment 1992.

3. Call for a Gender Inclusivity Policy to reduce discrimination and promote equal opportunities for all stakeholders, including women, youth, and marginalized groups.

4. Support DAP’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and urge thorough investigations by MACC.

5. Push for enhanced support for single mothers to improve their quality of life and access to opportunities.

The event highlighted DAP Sabah Women’s Wing’s strong commitment to equality, diversity, and good governance. The newly elected leadership embodies the inclusive and progressive spirit of Sabah, with representation from all 9 divisions.
