After much reflection, I have decided to withdraw from contesting in the DAP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) election at the party’s upcoming 18th National Congress on 16 March 2025. I believe the time has come for me to take a step back and allow the younger generation to lead as the party rejuvenates itself to meet the nation’s evolving challenges.
For the past 30 years, I have dedicated myself to serving the party and the people, experiencing both triumphs and trials along the way. The unwavering support of ordinary party members, who stood by me through thick and thin in upholding our shared principles, has been my greatest source of strength. To all my staunch supporters, I extend my deepest and sincerest gratitude for your steadfast commitment to the cause and party.
I joined the DAP because of its socialist and democratic ideals—a multi-ethnic struggle for a just and inclusive Malaysia. It has been a profound honour to be part of this journey.
From its inception, DAP has championed the rights of ordinary, working-class Malaysians and human rights as a whole. The party must always remain true to its socialist foundation, fighting for equity, justice, human rights, and good governance. We must never forget the sacrifices of our members during the most challenging times—when arrests, persecution, and intimidation were common. I remember how, despite harsh financial hardship, many of our members then spent from their own pockets to attend party events, assist in elections, and support our cause, all in the pure hope of building a better Malaysia. These dedicated members are still with us today, and we must continue to honour their contributions. I hope they will not be forgotten.
As Minister of Human Resources in the past, many of the reforms I introduced in labour laws were rooted in the very principles of human rights that the DAP and our members have always stood for. I take pride in the progress we have made in strengthening workers’ rights, improving wages, and expanding social security protections. However, there is still much work to be done.
Substantive reforms across all sectors must be expedited—political expedience and delays in implementing reforms are unacceptable. The poor, the vulnerable, and the downtrodden urgently need affirmative action to uplift their lives. Without decisive action, nothing will change. Malaysia thrives when the needs of all communities are addressed.
I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Sdr Lim Kit Siang, DAP Chairman Sdr Lim Guan Eng, DAP Secretary-General Sdr Anthony Loke, and all my comrades in the DAP for their unwavering support, guidance, and solidarity over the many years. Their wisdom and encouragement have made this journey through politics and in the DAP truly enriching and fulfilling.
As we move forward, I sincerely hope the party will continue to stay true to its founding principles while charting a new course with the younger generation at the helm.
