At the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) Joint Business and Investment Forum, I shared with the audience that the JS-SEZ is important and beneficial to both Malaysia and Singapore, especially in the current volatile global trade environment.
Also via the JS-SEZ, we get to transform our economic model from being an outsourced manufacturing hub to an innovation hub.
In Malaysia’s context, it is about “Made by Malaysia” and “Made by Malaysians”, by creating our own intellectual properties and innovation. I think Singapore shares the same aspiration to create its own technology. It is no longer just about being a user but also a creator.
We hope to see more R&D and new technologies being developed in the region.

Liew Chin Tong,
Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry
